Volunteering allows students to acquire skills and confidence
through work experience as well as clarify goals for educational
and career paths. Training is provided for all volunteer positions.
Volunteering at The Marine Mammal Center is fun and a great
way to meet others who share your concern for wildlife and
our ocean environment!
Youth Volunteer Opportunities
Animal Care
Gain a deeper understanding of the marine mammals
cared for at the hospital, why they are here, and what
it is like to care for them. Animal care volunteers provide
the daily care of the animals, which includes general
cleaning, laundry, dishes, equipment maintenance, weighing,
charting records, and preparing food for feeding. Youth
volunteers (under 18) are not allowed to have contact
with the animals or go in the pens with the animals but
learn through observation. Requires a commitment of one
4 to 8 hour shift per week for the semester or summer. |

Docents
If you enjoy talking and sharing information with the public, consider becoming a docent. Hospital Docents work outdoors near the animal pens and help children and adults understand what they are seeing when visiting The Center. Requires a minimum of one shift per week 10 am to 1 pm or 1 pm to 4 pm for one semester or summer. |

Stranding
The Stranding Department is responsible for rescue, transport and release of all the animals. Youth volunteers may assist with preparing the equipment for rescues and releases and may observe these events; however, youth volunteers (under 18) are not allowed to have contact with the animals. Volunteers will also assist with equipment maintenance, errands, answering the rescue phone, and general office work. Flexible hours, 3 to 8 hour shifts per week for a commitment of six weeks |

Office Volunteer
If you prefer office environments to the outdoors, this is the place for you. Gain valuable skills for college or resume. Assist office staff with copying, mailings, data entry, or preparing hands-on activities for education programs. Flexible hours, one 3 to 4 hour shift per week for one semester or summer. |

Info Hut
Info Hut volunteers greet visitors, answer the central telephone incoming lines, and are the public liaison for rescue calls to The Center. These volunteers are the very heart of our communication system, helping to ensure that the public's contact with The Center is friendly, efficient, and helpful. The Info Hut is open daily 10 am to 4 pm. Requires a 3 to 6 hour shift per week for one semester or summer. |

Life Support/Facilities
The Facilities department is directly involved in supporting animal care. If you are mechanically inclined, facilities is a perfect fit. Handy volunteers assist in basic carpentry, plumbing, landscaping and gardening. Flexible hours, 4 to 8 hours per week for one semester or summer. |

The Marine Mammal Center Store
Are you interested in retail experience? Consider becoming a The Marine Mammal Center Store volunteer. Price merchandise, clean, inventory, stock the store, and help visitors pick out the perfect gift. The Center store is open daily 10 am to 4 pm. PIER 39 store is open daily 10 am to 9 pm. Requires one 2 to 4 hour shift per week for one semester or summer. |

Specimen Preparation
Do you want to learn about marine mammal anatomy? Do you enjoy the discovery of dissecting? Specimen volunteers assist in preparation and articulation of marine mammal skeletal and biological samples. Your final products will contribute to our Education and Veterinary Science Department specimen collections. Flexible hours, 4 to 8 hours per week for one semester or summer. |
